Im planning on buying a new pair of cans and hope to build up from there. My budget is $400 and will be using it for the headphones and possibly a portable amp. I've listened to the Denon D2000's and fell in love with them. My question is whether I should use the $400 to get the D2000's with an amp, or upgrade to the D5000 and hold off on the amp for a while. Is the D5000 that much of an improvement? And is an amp really required for the D5000.

Oh and I'm using a Zune 80 and an XPS 16 with FLAC or WMA lossless files for those interested.

I have the D2000 use a NuForce Icon Mobile with it and they really liven up with the amp and it's a wimp as far as most amps go!

Just be careful because I hear the D5000 has a very different sound signature so try them out first

Well, the D5000 is $340 on Amazon today, so I'd try to decide within the next few minutes. I've gone ahead and bought one. Amazon doesn't ship it immediately, so you have a few days to cancel the order. At $340, it's underpriced. Very close to dealer cost. Just take a leap of faith and get the 5000.

I would personally get the D2000 and recable it with a D5000 stock cable, then spend rest of the money on the amp.

The D2000 with D5000 cable is quite close to D5000, woodie does change the sound a little (neither good or bad, just a matter of taste).

But if you have applied the markl-mod, i find they are almost the same. My 2 pennies.
