I lent my d2k to a buddy for a month and it came back nicked on one of the the metal frames enclosing the cups. Sonically it was as good as before it left the house so I didn't nitpick over it. If it bothers you that much, you can always ghetto mod and paint black over the cups. I painted my 7-year old shabby keyboard like that before.

Or buy plastic cups from someone who has done the wood cup upgrade and doesn't want/need their old plastic cups. You could put a WTB request in the sale/trade section.

I would suggest learning to live with it, no matter how difficult it is right now. Seems to me that the 'new item-itis' wears off eventually, and you will end up appreciating the function more than the form. I used to care deeply whether or not my cell phone stayed perfect and shiny. A down the road, I would use the thing to open a beer bottle if called to action.
