Hey guys just received the D2000s from Electronic Expo yesterday and they sound pretty awesome. This is an upgrade from some Bose QC15s so its a really good one for me haha. I just had some questions for you guys.

1. The D5000s are still $399 on Electronics Expo and I was just wondering are the D5000s that much better than the D2000s to warrant the extra $200? If so how are they better?

2. If I do keep the D2000s, what is a sufficient amp that will be able to make it sound richer and fuller that is under $100. As of right now I am just running the D2000 from my Macbook Pro and itouch. This amp would be used at my desk the majority of the time. I have looked up the FiiO E10 & E11 and was wondering if there was a big difference between the 2? Also is there any mods that I should consider to the D2000 in terms of replacing the ear pads, cables, or possibly sending the to Lawton Audio to get them modified.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

E11 beats the E10, IMO. There is a difference - although both power similarly, they've got different chips inside (IIRC)
Splurge and get the E17

The cost difference to sound difference between the D2000 and D5000 isn't very spectacular. The D5000 is warmer, definitely, but not 200 dollars warmer. At the price, there's better phones.

Thanks for the advice. Are there any other amps under $100 then thats better than the E11 or E10 that i should be looking at.

Also is it better if I just stay with the D2000s for now as i just got them recently.

Just curious - what condition were your open box D2000s?  Truly "like new"?  Mine should be here next week.

If you are a little handy with assembling your own amp the DIY O2 reference amp is the best value that money can buy. At $100.00 that is a major steal of a deal. Or you could be lazy like me and just pay a little more and get it pre-assembled for $150.00. Very well worth the money IMO. I am listening to the amp right now as I type and its blowing me away at how good it is. This thing is really an expensive amp destroyer. Very transparent and true to the source. It gives you what you feed it. I'm listening to this amp with paired to my DACport LX and my Open-back Denon 5000s.

What company makes the O2 amp? I am having a hard time looking where to buy it?

Also lee, did you ever own the D2000s and if you did are they a lot different than the D5000s and how are you enjoying the D5000 before you modded them

I've never owned the denon 2000s. The Denon 2000s have more mid bass and less sub bass while the denon 5000s have less mid bass and more sub bass. The Denon 5000s don't have a recessed mid range while the Denon 2000s and 7000s have a recessed mid range. The Denon 5000s have an upgrade cable and wood cups which affects the timbre. I did like the 5000s before I modded them but at times I found them to have a bit too much sub bass for my liking (vibrating my head). After the mod I think they improved greatly and I could not go back to stock after getting use to such sound.

It's a DIY design by nwavguy, I Know Epiphany Acoustics sells it in Europe but can't recall the US one that sells 'em. Try sticking "nwavguy" in your search terms and you should be able to find it.

So do you think the D5000 are worth the extra $200 over the D2000s or should I just save up the money to either mod my D2000s or something else.

Not heard D5000 but these might be useful

General consensus seems to be that the D5000 is a tiny, tiny bit better.

I'm honestly not sure as I've never owned the Denon 2000s. I recommended them to my friend as work and he is extremely happy with his 2000s. If you can get the 5000s at a good price (I got mine for $399.00) then I feel they are well worth the extra money. The fact that the Denon 5000s don't have a recessed mid range and less mid bass and more sub bass allows the open-back mod to shine even more than on its brothers IMO.

Also I forgot to ask, what is the difference between the mid bass and sub bass on these headphones? Does sub bass mean it goes down deeper or something else?

Sub bass is bass that goes deeper as you said. Mid bass is exactly how it sounds bass in the mid region. Too much mid bass can cause bloat and veil to the mid range. I'm sure this is one of the reasons the 2000s have a recessed mid range, also its treble is another contributing factor. Sames goes for the 7000s. So yes the Denon 5000 has more sub bass quantity.

Keep in mind though the Open-back mod I told you about in no way needs to be a permanent mod to test out. I just tested it out initially to see if I liked it and I liked it so much that I made it permanent. Otherwise you could always revert back to stock with no damage or permanent modifications and its quite easy to do as well.
