If you are listening on the go most of the time, ive read the ES7 is pretty good for the job. I reconmend getting AD700, the soundstage and the details in the higher range is fantastic. Only if you listen mostly at home though.

my es7 sound very good with 1st gen rockboxed nano. not so good as with my kenwood hd20, but very descent! m50 are even better, but they suck for me in terms of portability. m50 are more bassy - es7 are more sparkling to my ears

I was not pleased with the sound of the ES7 unamped. I am in the minority on that, I know. But to me it lacked transient response and was just generally flat and dull, at least compared to the same headphone with a proper amp.

I haven't heard the D1001 to compare. FWIW the best closed headphone I know unamped from an iPod remains the HD25-1.

+1 on the SRH 440's. I demoed a pair and they sound fantastic, even coming straight from the iPod headphone out. Very easy to drive, more like 60-70% to achieve normal listening levels. Compared to my K518 DJ's, they are more emphasized on the mids and treble. Sparkling highs and greater detail are its big points. Bass may be less than the AKG's, but it's still present and goes deep.
