I am a bit disappointed in the sound. Nowhere near the performance of the D7000. It is better on iPhone 4s, but I'm not gonna take a $500 headphones to use on the streets of S.F.

What amp are you using to make these unamped on 4S to sound better?....
I just bought a pair, they sounded great with the pro-ject amp compared to the iPhone out,
of course I docked it on a pro-ject apple dock then connected to the amp, but with an amp these things seriously standout,
and I wouldn't expect D7000 SQ with these, they are half the price of D7000, and they are meant for portable as well
Well, from my experience when amped these sound too bloated to me. I tried a few different amps and I know it's not the amp making it because the Lehmann Audio BCL is very flat & neutral. On the iPhone 4s, these are much better, but still wasn't my taste. The D7000 sounds like crap when paired with an iPhone, but really shines with a nice amp. I would go as far as saying the D7000 is Hi-Fi, the A100 is not. However, I think Denon designed the A100 for portable use without an amp which makes sense when you listen to them on an iPhone. For me, $500 headphones is not what I want to take out for street use. I've been robbed at gun point a few times in San Francisco and the A100 will definitely get me robbed.
