Denon 2000, how does it compare with the HD25-1 in SQ?????

Short answer....yes. I have owned both, and while I love the HD25, the Denon
is in another league(for not much more money!).

I am asking for an unamped comparision though...
I know that the HD25-1 does not benefit from an amp (plugged it into a HeadRoom micro and sounded the same)... does the D2000 actually benefit from an amp??

Yes, my D2000 sound better with an amp, and they sound better than the HD25-1 that I sold. However, my D2000 have an APureSound re-cable done to them, and they are closer to a D5000 in sound (based upon my trips to the local hi-fi store to listen to stock D2000 and D5000 vs mine).

With a D2000, they get better as your source and amp get better, and are truly Hi-Fi. The HD25-1 didn't have as much potential, even when I tried my APureSound HD600 cable on them they didn't scale up as well (the soundstage was really missing, and I was always more aware that I was listening to headphones).

the hd25-1 DOES improve a bit with an amp, but the denons just seem to be better for "at-home-listening" due to the comfort, general SQ, and scalability with a good source (and maybe amp)

I find the volume out of my iPod Touch a bit too weak with the D2000, so it's not an ideal headphone to get unamped.

The D2000 is comparable to the best dynamic headphones, so it is really is a different league than the HD25
