on my computer and home theater when I don't want to disturb others in the house (probably not in the same room). The D2000 seems like a safe, well-respected choice.

But now I'm debating whether I would be happier with an open design to avoid hot, sweaty ears and get an improved surround experience.

Any recommendation on an equivalent open headphone, or if the D2000 will be plenty comfortable during extended wearing?

In my experience the D2000's never made my ears overly hot or even sweaty, you'll get excessive headband pressure before that ever happens. Extremely comfy phones though you'll be able to wear them for extended periods without indecent. Depending on your volume levels though, they do leak a moderate amount of sound.
