Not necessarily... A long standing trick is to use 75 ohm resistors in front of a KSC75 to help smooth its somewhat peak-ey midrange.
 
I think it was a Kevin Gilmore article I read that said resistor values less than ~4x the headphone impedance run greater risk of coloring the sound.

Edit: Seems like you can connect the transformers between the amp and the headphones.

Correct... as an added bonus / safety feature the transformers filter DC from the cans.
 
Here's my thread / discussion... very happy with this mod.  For nearly a decade on HF, I thought I couldn't use an OTL amp with my low-Z cans.  Its totally opened up the possibility of OTL amps with my Grados.
