Hello,

I recently got a JVC UX-EP25 system for my bedroom (at half price!) and while it's nice to have something as small and functional, I really miss having a bit of bass (speakers are 135 Hz - 18 kHz

). I'd really like to get better speakers for it but the specs of the system are rather limiting (also, some of them I'm not sure what they mean):
  1. 7.5W / channel, min RMS, driven into 6Ω at 1kHz;
  2. speaker terminals: 6Ω - 16Ω.
Does anyone think it's possible to find decent speakers that won't overheat the unit?
Many thanks in advance,
Ben P.

Budget? Location? How small is your bedroom?

Alai,

Thanks for your reply; yes, good questions

My bedroom's about 15'x15' and the system will be on a thick, solid shelf.
As for budget, something under $300/pair would be ideal but I'm open to any suggestion.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't think your system has enough power to produce appreciably increased bass even with a speaker upgrade. The only speakers I can think of off the top of my head that would work are horns and single drivers (Lowther, Klipsch, Fostex). However these are over your budget.
If you wanted, you could try to build your own with a high efficiency Fostex single driver. The advantage to these is that they would still scale if you upgraded your amp. Anyway take a look at the site in the link. It may be of some interest.

Get some vintage Radio Shack Minimus 7s. Make sure they are the made in Japan version with the Fostex drivers.
They should run you about $20-$40 on Ebay.

Low power isn't the end of the world.

Ohm's law is your friend. With the specs you have your system outputs 1.12 amps at 6.7 volts. That is assuming 7.5watts RMS is the real output. I'd say not likely so lets round down to 1 amp.

What I am unsure of is if the amp is running at 6 ohms, the statment into 6 ohms seems vague as the speakers are also 6 ohm. Ideally you should look for 6 ohm speakers but that's gonna be hard. 4 and 8 are the common for speakers. DO NOT buy 4 ohm speakers as you will blow up your amp. http://www.prestonelectronics.com/audio/Impedance.htm

What you need to look for is something with a high sensitivity in the range of 94-96db or so, there are some klipsch bookshelves that might meet this area.

The higher the sensitivity the better.

Edit: These might work. http://www.klipsch.com/products/deta...specifications Notice as said above they have horns. They are rated 92db at 2.83 volts and supposedly your system is able to do twice that. But given its half of the supposed power, clipping is almost guaranteed. Well good luck.

Good little speakers but, if I remember correctly, the sensitivity was 84 dB spl for 1 W at 1 meter. The recommended power was at least 15 - 20 watts per channel . Might work if placed against a wall or in corners.
The Fostex FE206E single 8" drivers are rated at 96db.

Thanks for all the replies; and kydsid, thanks for making all those calculations for me

I'll try to check the Klipsch in my area, although they're a bit more expensive than I'd like.

By the way, I have an old pair of 4Ω speakers that I tried for 2 minutes - the sound was pretty good but I'm aware I can't really use them on that system...
Also, the tiny speakers that come with it are (according to specs...) 6Ω! I doubt that's really the case.

Any other suggestions are welcome

Paradigm Atom Monitor v.5 $289 @6ave.com. Look at some of the many reviews from Stereophile/The Absolute Sound/What Hi-Fi etc.. It will be very hard to find a better speaker for the price.
Good Luck & Happy Holidays
