One option is to look for a used Music Hall CD25,they can be had for as low as $300,upgrade the op-amps at a cost of $10 and you have a rig that many feel beats anything under $1000 new.

Check out the NAD's on Audiogon. Most of the 541i are going for between $300 and $325.

Yup. And the 541i is a great player at it's price point (new or used).

check out the 4 sale section here as well. Theres an Adcom for under $200. Its very good and you can use it as a transport with an ART dac if you want to upgrade as you go.

I found a Marantz CD-6000 SE (used) for $250, is that a good deal?

Is Marantz even a good player?

SE? Probably an OSE... Anyway, it's a nice player with good tuning potential - I'd put it in the range of the NAD 521i. US$ 250 doesn't seem that cheap, though - you could have them for ~ 700 DM/350 Euro new over here (incl. 16 % VAT).

Hehe, suggested retail or de facto retail (= street price)?

Street price meaning what you really have to pay in larger shops or per online order - for almost all the large consumer electronic brands, there's always a fairly large margin between the suggested retail price suggested by the manufacturer and the actual street price - at least over here, and it seemed fairly similar in the US...
