December 6th New England Headfi Meet at Fidelis AV - Impressions Thread

I had a great time at the meet, listened to most of the headphones. My favorites were the HE-400i and the ZMF Blackwood.
I did realize at the meet that 2x the price won't always get you 2x the enjoyment. The Stax was great, but it was certainly not 10x better than the $450-$500 HE-400i (whose sound signature I actually preferred). The best headphone I had tried before the meet was a Sennheiser RS180, which goes for ~$200, and totally wowed me. The two headphones I listed as my favorites gave me that wow feeling again, but it wasn't as incredible as the first time I tried the RS180.

I was really glad to try out the FiiO X1 with my own headphones (Shure SRH440), it was a wonderful music player and I loved the look and feel. The UI and sound were great as well. Hopefully this spring I'll get the X1 with some IEMs, then the Schiit Fulla (the Magni/Modi combo were wonderful) with Sennheiser HD558s/the IEMs. Speaking of IEMs, at the meet I got to try some good bassy headphones. Before I'd gone to the meet, the only bassy headphones I had tried were congested and muddy. I really enjoyed some of the more bassy (than mine) headphones there, especially the woodied Denon and the Blackwood. I'm now considering Shure SE215s; has anyone tried them/can anyone do a very short comparison to a similar sounding headphone that was at the meet? Amount/quality of bass, vocals forwards/distant, and separation are my main interests.

It was great to meet everyone and try out all the headphones, I look forwards to the next meet.

Did you get a chance to try the Shure 1540 at the meet ?  They were really bassy that sounding good if you liked that sound sig.

As I was typing this I thought of this.

I did get to try them, they were wonderful. Absolutely loved them. I'm actually switching from searching for a neutral IEM to a bassy IEM now, trying to find something that has a similar sound to the SRH1540 and Blackwood. Those two were the some of the best closed-back headphones I've tried (Blackwood my favorite). I'm looking at the Shure SE215 at the moment, along with a few other IEMs. I'm thinking about just going with the Shures, seeing as how they're supposed to have great isolation and Shure has never let me down before.

I never really looked into the KC06A, though I've heard about it all the time. From what I'm reading, isolation is only about average; I really need some incredible isolation for the loud bus I'm on everyday (one of the main reasons I'm considering the Shures). Do the Comply tips really increase the isolation? Also, thanks for your recommendation and creating/bringing the Blackwood.

The whole time there I was either talking to people, listening to headphones, eating, taking pictures or videos that I forgot the most important thing, people's names/screen names.

With that said does anyone know this nice fella's alias (green shirt) on head-fi ? I have a couple of questions to ask him.

I listened to them on the Plane back to Chicago and they did pretty good with the Comply tips.  Didn't block out the very low hum of the engine but I don't think any non-active noise cancelling set would.   They also are very efficient so you don't necessarily need an amp for them to get very good sound.  I just use an IPOD Classic 5.5.

I remember his real name (Eugene) but I have no idea what his head-fi name is!
