Don't know how many of you folks visit diyAudio so I thought I would pass this on. Nelson Pass has designed the B1 buffer, diyAudio member Salas has designed a DC version with a shunt regulator. I have prototyped this and used a Lightspeed attenuator in place of the pot. All I can say is that you owe it to yourself to check it out. This is really something special. I know we are all chasing that "sound" and I think that this will help you get a little closer to finding it. It is not a headphone amp, but I think it is too special not to share here.
