I have a DACMagic Plus fed by my PC via an Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card using its SPDIF connector.  The DAC feeds some Genelec active speakers.  The problem is that intermittently, and unpredictably,on some pc boot ups and sometimes when awaking from sleep, the DAC is inactive.  When this happens, I have to switch the DACMagic Plus on and off to get the DAC working. At other times, the DAC works perfectly normally.  I'm assuming it's a DAC problem - rather than a pc/STX one - because switching the DAC on and off solves it.
 
Do you think the DAC is faulty?  Or is there some other problem?

I take it that it doesn't show that it is receiving a signal from the computer? Unless the computer isn't playing sound the DAC has no reason to be active. I'm guessing that even when sound starts playing the DAC doesn't do anything? Can you test any other source to see if it behaves the same way?

Thanks.  Yes, a sound source is active on the computer but no sound comes via the DAC.  Switching the DAC on and off makes the signal audible again.
