I've been happy with my Marantz dac and have used it together with several different AT headphones (MSR7SE, A1000Z, A2000Z, R70x). But I have recently purchased a Stax setup, L700 + 007tII. Since I now have a separate amp for the L700's I am now looking at upgrading my dac.
What would be a good upgrade from the Marantz HD-DAC1? I'm looking for something in the 500-1000 Euro range that's available in the EU. I don't really need a headphone out and I would prefer for it to have balanced out (XLR). So far I find Hegel HD12 and RME ADI-2 DAC to be interesting alternatives, but are they really an upgrade soundwise from the Marantz? Thanks for your help and feedback.
