anyone know or think they know what would happen if you took toslink optical out from a settop cable box and put it to an external dac rather than directly to avr? think sound quality might inprove
i have always been less than pleased with twhd audio compared to directtv audio when i had it
 
same goes for doing optical or digital spdif from my cd/dvd-a/sacd changer to dac then rca out to avr

The external DAC only accepts SPDIF format so it won't be able to decode the digital output from the DVR.
