i was hoping to keep the system minimalist. airport express -> monica dac -> kookaburra preamp/headphone amp ->charlize amp -> diy fostex horns.

if i can't get it to work i will have to change dac's or continue using the dac from the airport express.

any ideas on how to check what's wrong?

yeah take the dac to a friend and test it in his/her dvd player.

I remember the first time I fired up my DAC no sucess. 15min later I realised my DVD player's digital output was disabled.

I have a vague recollection seeing RCA->TOSLINK adapter in Ratshack. Ask if you have one around. You can get one just to test the DAC and eliminate that modlule before you make a working one.
