Hello.

I'm currently using a pair of Sennheiser HD 555s powered by my motherboards soundcard. I've had these headphones for some years now and I feel it's time for an upgrade.

Most of the time I listen to electronic music or metal, but also jazz and sometimes classical music. I usually wear my headphones for long sessions so it's very important that they are comfortable. I'm not a basshead and I prefer quality over quantity. I'm leaning towards the Beyerdynamic dt880's but I'm a little concerned the highs will be too sharp for my ears, so if you think any other headphone would suit me better please say so.

I am completely clueless about what amp and DAC I should get, and the more I read the more confused I get. But I have been looking into maybe getting the Matrix m-stage or the E17/E09k combo, but I'm not sure they will power the dt880's properly, if I get them.

My budget is around 400€ but I could stretch to 500€ if it would be worth it. All recommendations and help is greatly appreciated.

Probably the 250-Ohm version. I don't think it would be worth ~50€ more for a very slight improvement.

Hadn't heard about these before, and from the little I've read this far I think I would like them. I also found a good deal on these so it's definitely a possible purchase.

Is this setup for music only?
Movies? gaming?

Personally I don't like the dt880 at all. I found it to seem slow-ish and cold. Also, the x1 isn't as picky with amplification at all, it can be driven well from anything better than a computer or phone (it doesn't require more amping than your hd555). Haven't heard it, though. From what I have read, it is perfect for your use.
