It IS the battery...
That exact same thing happened with my 311, i'd put it on charge, and then after a few seconds it'd fizzle out... that is when I decided to lick the battery terminals to see if I could 'taste' the charge... put it back into the player, and it then charged solidly for four hours
...don't forget that these batteries have probably been sat in Sonys warehouse for the past ten years.. they need a little coaxing... just like a car battery would (and... fundamentally, they are the same kind of battery also
