I'd say 225 as my 325i goldies improve significantly with an amp, but I haven't compared the Denons so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

The 225s and 325s clean up nicely with amplification, but it's not strictly required. The D2000s, from my short experience, *require* amplification to not sound tizzy and thin.

i personally feel that my old sr225 didnt improve as much as my denon ahd2000 with an amp so the sr225 showed more of its potential unamped. However both cans are amazing unamped still.

wrt d2000

depends on your source mate.
if its from a portable, even from the high and mighty cowon d2 - need an amp. it does not sound good.
on the other hand, lets say from the headphone out of a m-audio revo - sounds fine. no need for amp.
