I'm using um2 for more than 3 years, it's been great, i like the over all sound of that. lately i'm thinking of going custom. bugdet 400$, 70% of the time i listen to prog metal ( dream theater, lte, opeth, circus maximus...), so there'll be a lot going on at the same time. so i want good speed, and most important good detail. and ofcourse overall sound should be suitable for metal. and comfort is also a big factor to me, i can't stand e2c so let alone stuff like er4. um2 are very pleasing to my ears, no fatigue at all.

i'm basicly choosing between the es2 jh-5 and ue4. I'm also very interested in the grado cans as they are often recommended for rock metal listeners. But i travel a lot in undergrounds, so i guess open cans is out of question.

anyway, I'm counting um mage in, i guess that's one of the high-end ones.

I put a vote in for the Mage. It is very fast and accurate. It can definitely keep up when a lot of things are going on. Incredible clarity and detail but it does lack some bass quantity but I make up for it by setting clearbass to +1 on my X1060. I've had them for about a week and I like them more and more each day. In retrospect, I should have skipped buying universals.

I've not had the pleasure of hearing JH5s, but the UE4s and both types of LiveWires are excellent. Also the Hearyourself.com C3 has a great laid back sound which, depending on your source, might be just the ticket.

If you are willing to wait a while and potentially deal with less than stellar customer service, I recommend trying the C3 or LiveWires, as both have a return policy if you end up not liking the final product.

I don't think it's that noone is interested or cares about low end....it's more the fact that there are so few choices of IEM's that actually have strong low end punch.

The Klipsch S4 is the strongest low end boom I have heard.

sry for the confusion, by low-end I meant not the flagship models, cheaper ones

. I'm not a bass head for that matter. I don't think that metal needs loads of bass quantity, as long as it's fast and punchy.

well I am definitly leaning more towards mage at the moment. good quality price ratio, and superb build quality i hear. As for the bass, I don't think that'll be a problem, I'm more persuing details. Unless someone tells me that metal sounds absolutly horrible with the mage for the bass it's lacking.

Besides, I'm also kinda considering the cowon d2+ or s9. So maybe it can make up for the bass mage is lacking. Normally I don't like to tweek with eq and stuff, cuz once i start i just can't stop and enjoy music.

the strange thing about those mages is, although made in China, very few people/audiophiles have heard of them. Are they only shipped overseas or what?

Today with the Mage I've listened to some songs from Metallica - Ride The Lightning, Megadeth - Endgame, Mastodon - Crack The Skye, and it sounds fantastic. Very fast and incredibly detailed. Best midrange I've heard from an iem. Personally, I think it needs a bit more in the low end but it responds very well with an eq in the bass frequencies. I have the D2 with D2+ firmware and it won't make up for the bass unless you set mach3bass very high. They are fairly new (not even on their website) and only shipped from China as all of Unique Melody's customs are made there. Apparently they spent a long time tuning the Mage.
