how do they paint the outer ring and preserve/or change the writing on them? it boggles my mind how thats possible?

It seems to be the case. One reason I could think of would be because of previous customers complaining about the painting quality of used products. I don't specifically know about the HD800, but I had read some reviews of other poor-quality colorwared products (iPad, etc) that were previously owned. I personally think it was an OCD matter. Regardless, I haven't seen complaints from the brand new products as of yet.

It's interesting that the colorwared HD800 is now $1599. It used to be $1499 when it was first introduced.
