Why don't you want an amp? There are amps that'll run off the USB power of your laptop and are quite small

I'm looking at the BeyerDynamic DT-990 and PROline 2500 atm

x3 on amp. For me, $400 spent on hp+amp combo sound better than any expensive phones alone. I use DT990 + Corda Move, which cost me $450 total.

More phones for you: DT660 and Beyerdynamic DTX series. I like Beyers DT660/770/880/990, they are true bargains. I never heard DTX, so I am not able to comment SQ-wise.
