Current drive?

Are there any headphone amps out there (DIY or commercial) that are current source amps? Seems that all of Nelson Pass' offerings are a bit too powerful for everything, save the K1000's.

Also, how would you create a current source amp? Assuming a basic CMoy setup, would you add a CCS to one of the power rails? Any other modifications needed?

Take a simple noninverting opamp circuit and some balanced phones (2 lines per phone) and do this:

Get rid of the feedback resistor, and connect the headphone between the output and the inverting input. Then size the resistor from inverting input to ground so that R = Desired Input voltage / Desired Output current.


There are other ways to do it. So that the load can be grounded, or so you can use a transistor to boost the current capabilitym etc..etc... But this is the simplest.
