May be old news (search is down), but just came across this info. Looks like first 4 are coming first with a bonus disc of extra material: Quote:

The Cure will be releasing remastered versions of their studio albums, starting with Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography. Each will be a 2-cd set, with the 2nd disc containing demos, remixes, and unrealesed material. The first 4 are currently scheduled for release in the US on Aug. 17th, 2004.

We can only assume the rest will follow soon. IMO, the Rhino remasters never sound *bad*, some are excellent, most are merely "above average". Let's hope these sound better than the recent Echo & the Bunnymen remasters they did, though.

DA & bong, time to start saving your pennies!

P.S. Here's a quote from Robert about the upcoming new album: " "I think it's the best thing we've ever done," Smith said proudly. "The album is called 'The Cure.' If you don't like it, then you don't like us."

Yes they will be mine.........especially since I passed on recent 4CD set, that is still a long way off though.

d'oh! CAN'T WAIT!!! actually, the first four remasters were delayed a few times already. they were supposed to be released mid March, then the end of April, and now August.

can't stand the antici... PATION! still no specs on what's going on each bonus disc though...

i can speculate that the Peel/BBC sessions will be on the bonus discs corresponding to each album. i'd love to hear these songs straight from Robert's or BBC's master tapes instead of crappy bootlegs. "Grinding Halt/Desparate Journalist," A Forest," "All Cats Are Grey," "Primary (Cold Colours)," "Forever," and "The Figurehead" are all very good.

i'm also expecting "Carnage Visors" to be on the "Faith" bonus disc, as well as the 12" extended version of "Primary" and hopefully a remastered version of "Charlotte Sometimes" because the one on "Staring At the Sea" sounds like a bloody, muddy piece of crap. but what a great song that is...

maybe some old Easy Cure demos will appear on the "Three Imaginary Boys" bonus? i've read many times Robert is not very fond of these songs, but a few had leaked out on various bootlegs. "See the Children" and "I Want to be Old" are particularly humourous, if not first rate songs.

'The End' In Sight For The Cure

The Cure's first album in four years will be a self-titled affair,
frontman Robert Smith announced last night (April 28) in New York at
the
first playback of the upcoming release. "The Cure" will arrive June 29
on producer Ross Robinson's I Am imprint via Geffen. The group will
perform first single "The End of the World" tomorrow on NBC's "The
Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and headline the Coachella festival on
Sunday in Indio, Calif.

"I think it's the best thing we've ever done," Smith said proudly. "The
album is called 'The Cure.' If you don't like it, then you don't like
us." Smith stood silently in the corner of the room by himself while
the
14-track album was played for about 40 journalists and guests,
occasionally taking notes in preparation for approving the final mix
and
running order.

The album kicks off with the slow, discordant "Lost," featuring the
first of many impassioned vocal performances from Smith. A throbbing
bass groove powers the tentatively titled "Labyrinths," with Smith
wailing, "It's not the same / it never was like this / everything has
to
change."

The classic Cure sound is evident on such tracks as "Before 3," "Taking
Off" and "I Don't Know What's Going On," which sport great melodies and
foot-tapping tempos. The 12th track, the tentatively titled "Jason #3"
provides the album with a late shot of energy thanks to a clever,
melodically ascending chorus.

But the album has its share of dark and intense material, particularly
the epic penultimate track "The Promise," which runs past 10 minutes
and
climaxes in feedback and noise. "Us or Them" matches its
confrontational
title with an emphatic chorus ("I don't want you anywhere near me"),
while "Going Nowhere" wraps things up with sad, dreamy production
accented by piano.

"There was a moment where we had to decide whether to do some
conceptual
experiment with nothing over 100 [beats-per-minute], and all of us with
our heads down making a heavy, heavy album, but it wouldn't be as
good,"
Smith said. "The best Cure albums have a balance."

Smith revealed that former guitarist Porl Thompson, who left the Cure
in
1993, recorded parts for a couple of tracks. At Robinson's urging,
basic
tracks were recorded live, yet another throwback to an earlier time.

"Ross wanted to record us as a band, which we really hadn't done since
the second album we ever made," Smith said. "The days would build up
into these intense periods until we'd get the song. Everything was
played live and I had to sing live."

Smith held back on giving details of the band's summer tour, which is
rumored to feature such Cure-inspired new acts as Interpol, the Rapture
and Mogwai, but promised, "You'll enjoy the whole thing because it was
put together by us."

Here is the tentative track list for "The Cure":
"Lost"
"Labyrinths" (working title)
"Before 3" (working title)
"Truth Goodness and Beauty"
"The End of the World"
"I Don't Know What's Going On"
"Taking Off"
"Anniversary"
"This Morning"
"Us or Them"
"Precious Advise" (working title)
"Jason #3" (working title)
"The Promise"
"Going Nowhere"

also, as DarkAngel and dabblerblue mentioned on another post, The Cure is revealing their new single on Jay Leno tonight. i'm having a friend Tivo-ing it as i won't be home to catch it...

I'm looking forward to getting some quality versions of the "Lost Wishes" as well as stuff like Spilt Milk.

There's just so much stuff that I never thought we'd hear--and even with these releases, there's tons we still won't. Still, I can't wait--I'll take what I can get, and hey, they've been giving a lot lately.

They had around 40 demos for Disintegration... Hopefully they cram a bunch onto that second disc.

I rejoice!

DA -- you should definitely get that box set immediately -- it's what every box set should be -- 100% non-album cuts.

With Seventeen Seconds (1980) and Faith (1981) being all-time favorites, I sure hope the Rhino remasters are short on remixes and long on other original material. Would have made a nifty 2CD to pair these two titles. I think they were released as a set at some point, on cassette!

I believe the set you're talking about is called "Happily Ever After," if I'm not mistaken.

I also believe that there won't be many (if any) remixes; the bonus discs will include demos and previously unreleased stuff.

I can't wait. I'm going to be broke, but I can't wait.

And my husband doesn't see any point in remasters. My headphone setup disagrees with me.

I just wish they could have visited Finland or Sweden in their concert tour. Looks like I'll never get to see The Cure live, and yeah, I know..I'm missing out.

I saw them at Coachella at the beginning of the month in Southern California. It was pretty cool. I wish they would've played some more obscure stuff--or B-sides--seeing that they just released their box set. Still, they played four new songs, so that was cool.

Bong, it always seems out of place in other threads, but as this one is Cure-friendly I'll say it -

I just love that avatar! I have that Southpark on tape somewhere back home.

heh... thanks plainsong! the Robert "Mothra" Smith VS. Mecha Streisand is one of my favourite South Park episodes, especially the fact that Kyle screams "Disintegration is the best album ever" and Robert kicks Cartman in the nuts. and the fake Babs Streisand accent is hilarious.

i've seen an interview with Robert on Comedy Central; he says that when he was doing the lines he kept asking what the episode was about, Trey and Matt told him "just read the lines!" apparantly he had no idea what he got himself into.

when he saw the episode, after he heard Kyle's line he said that it was one of his proudest moments.

anyway... here's a cover pic for the upcoming self-titled album:

thecurealbumcover.jpg

looks like it's drawn by one of his nieces or nephews. it's better than the Bloodflowers cover.

04 THE END OF THE WORLD
05 ANNIVERSARY
06 US OR THEM
07 alt.end

09 TAKING OFF
10 NEVER
