Hello there fellow DIY-artists! As many of you probably know, back in the day drivers in headphones weren't capable of reproducing the entire frequency spectrum, so the crossover filter was invented, and used in headphones such as the well known Pioneer SE505.
But by our standards today those old phones doesn't exactly compete with high end gear anymore. Here comes the fun part! Technically such a crossover filter would accept any driver that fits in the headphone, so for a not too expensive project, say you took one of these old behemoth-cans and took it apart. Now replace the upper frequency driver with a small closed back headphone driver that does well with those frequencies, but not the lows due to size, fx. a Sennheiser PX 100/200.
Then for the low frequencies one of the many hated bass-head brands could come in handy: Skullcandy, Beats by Dre or Bose.
Reassemble the frankensteins monster and voila, you have now used old technology and new, to create something unique and if you got well matched parts it can sound rather amazing!
Another bonus is that many of the old 2-way headphones have built in crossfade systems which makes the new phones ideal for listening to your old Pink Floyd LP's or what have you!
If anyone else attempts this please post pictures!

Kind regards and good luck with your creations!
