What convolver does:

case 1: mono IR

left output channel = left input channel * mono IR
right output channel = right input channel * mono IR

case2: stereo IR

left output channel = left input channel * IR left channel
right output channel = right input channel * IR right channel


What HRTF plugin does:

2 stereo IRs are used.

left output channel = left input channel * IR1 left channel + right input channel * IR2 left channel
right output channel = left input channel * IR1 right channel + right input channel * IR2 right channel

Try this player from HEARO. You can demo it and if you want to buy it, it only costs $10. You can choose different modes of music and has a movie setting too. It sounds ok, but I like Pinkfloyd's xfeed better.

See if you can find an old Carver C9 Sonic Holography processor. It does a good job of crossfeed coupled with some sophisticated signal processing and carefully calculated bass boost to correct the bass dip created with crossfeed signal mixing.
An old C9 should be $50-60.
