Have tried plugging in and out but it intermittently makes a crackling sound. However, there is no distortion/crackling sound when in Bluetooth mode, connected to my Dell XPS 13. Is it simply a cable issue?

Assuming the signal you're outputting isn't so high that it occasionally overloads your amp or headphones, the most likely cause a dodgy connection between the cable and one of it's connectors. However, it could be a broken wire within the cable or a dodgy connection between the output connector and wire within your XPS. There are other possibilities but these are the most likely. Try different headphones or a different headphone cable, if you still have crackling then the output connector of your XPS is the next most likely culprit.
