Had my S9 for few years and loved it completly. But I'm not getting enought with the 32gb anymore. Had a look at the D3 with its expandable memory but I've seen that the battery life is miserable compared to the S9. Anything else I could consider?

There is also the j3, does it have to be from cowon?  Are you fine without tag browsing? (selecting songs by artist/album) ,  budget?

Doesn't need to be Cowon,but I trust them. I'd rather have tag browsing.
Budget of ~300$

The Cowon X7, X9 willbe better upgrade with huge capacity and longer battery life, other DAPs like Samsung Galaxy 4.2, 5.2 players, iPod Touch, iPod Classic, Sony Z, F series walkmen also has long battery life, more memory and great soundquality. iPods, Sony walkmen has lineout to connect with external AMPs for greater soundquality.

My s9 is just freezing all the time I have to stop and reboot constantly for about the last year. I installed new firmware a few months ago and before that the previous firmware release but it's still doing the same thing. Any suggestions.? May have to go to the great big hospital in the sky
