Hey. Im new here today. Have read alot. And have come to the conclusion that the CanAmp and AGK k701 suits my electronica needs. But before i order i would love to know some things. 1. Is the K702 any better or is it just the color.Mayby i have read it but im Rollercouster in my head right now.If not i will stick to the 701s. 2.Can i plug my computer right in the canamp or do i need a Dac? and final question.I need a new soundcard in my computer.do X-Fi do the job good or is it some better Cards out there? Sorry for bad english.(from norway). Big thanx for all help!

dont know anything about the Heed amp but I use my k701 with the Zero DAC/amp which sounds stupendous with my pc. I also listen to allot of electronica (aphextwin, autechre, BOC to name a few) and these are excellent phones for the genre....
oh and i have an xfi xtrememusic but im not sure its absolutely necessary as i bypass most of its use by using ASIO drivers ala foobar2000 for bitperfect playback (no filtration involved), think you can get that with just onboard audio but im not 100% sure

Welcome to Head-Fi HippieTom. Oh, you will be sorry for your wallet here, we are.

The 702s are the same as the 701s except for color and quickconnect cable. You can get the 701s for around $250 new or $200 used.

A DAC and the soundcard perform the same duty. Converting digital files to analog signals and sending it to either an output amp for hps or speakers or a line level out through RCA or mini jack connections. These connections will plug into your amp. You can come off your rca outs (if available) to your amp with standard RCA ICs. If your computer only offers a minijack, get a mini male to rca males.

The DAC or soundcard, you choose. Most think a DAC gives better performance vs a soundcard. Others not. Do you use your computer for gaming/recording or just music? Try your soundcard first. If you don't like the sound, you can go DAC shopping.

Happy listening.

Hi HippieTom.

The Heed CanAmp takes line-level signal in. That is to say there is no DAC in the CanAmp. Simple RCA cables to connect to it. Now, on your computer, that can be a different matter. In some cases, simply running a stereo mini jack-to-left and right RCA cable will do the trick but the fidelity might not be so hot. If you go to an upscale sound card with conventional RCA connectors as at least one option for its outputs, you're in the game!
You might want to watch for where you place the CanAmp in reference to your computer. Most computers can spew RF "noise" all over the place and you might catch a little of that by the CanAmp seeing it and amplifying it into your headphones. If it does happen, move it away from the CPU and you should be ok

Welcome to Head-Fi!

What's the difference? THe ground will be common in both cases...
A true upgrade will be from standalone dac for pc.

If run through the mini jack (headphone output) you're also listening to whatever little do-dad is being used as an amp to drive headphones with the computer. Through the analog outputs from a DAC card, you're at line level output and should be cleaner allowing the outboard headphone amp to drive the signal.

Is there a amp that requires not alot of cables? I'm loving my D2 Boa's USB DAC and was wondering if there is something I could get for my K701s. If not, I have a Macbook with the optical/digital out and might be willing to get cables for that
