Hi All

I like the sound of the flute... I was listening to some LTJ Bukem (drum & bass DJ/Producer) the other day and a couple of his tracks had flutes in them, which I liked a lot.

So, can someone please recommend me some more music with flutes in?

Thanks in advance!

You don't say whether you're looking for any specific genre.

The two things that come immediately to mind are:

1. Jethro Tull. Classic rock. Thick As as a Brick would probably be my recommendation.

2. Claude Bolling, Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano. This is a sort of classical-jazz fusion. I prefer Volume I to Volume II, but both are good.

Based on your thread title I was going to recommend LTJ Bukem!

I seem to recall some of the Freddie Hubbard albums have flute, though it is mostly jazz trumpet. A lot of modal jazz from the 70s will have flute.

Yeah, sorry, I was a bit vague wasn't I?

I think I'd prefer Jazz to classical or rock...

I'll try to find some Claude Bolling and Freddie Hubbard, thanks for the recommendations!

Anyone else?

Check out Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "I Talk With The Spirits". It's a compilation of most of his jazz flute work. Others that may be of interest are Eric Dolphy, Herbie Mann and Yusef Lateef.

Hmm, since this thread is here...

Is it jazz flute ? I'm not sure, but the flute that plays in the songs from the soundtrack for the movie Snatch. Love that sound, but don't really know what to look for that would have that kind of flute sound in it, help?

Yes! Eric Dolphy especially -- he was the most creative and energetic jazz flutist (is that the word?) I've ever heard. Since he also played alto sax and bass clarinet, most of his albums only had one or two tracks with him playing flute. For a specfic recomendation, try :

and a session with Coltrane, where he handles My Favorite Things on flute:

Wow! Thanks for all the replies!

I've found a bit on L/W this afternoon but it's all nasty 128k, I'm using it to evaluate what I enjoy and I'll then try to find it on Amazon.
