I'm really would like to know if the DENONs d2000 are identical to d5000 besides the wooden cups. I've been wondering if the price justifies the what seems to be a set of wooden cups. I know that they have better harmonic resonance dew to the cups... Or do they??? Are they built differently. By that I mean same components. I just happen to be a bit curious that all.

The DENON D2000 will be my first set of higher-end headphones. I just can't see myself paying double the price for the mahogany enclosures.

I think the nicer cable on the D5000 is responsible for the sound improvements over the D2000. I think my APureSound re-cabled D2000 sound better than the stock D5000 at the local hi-fi shop. The D5000 I heard have sweet mids and treble but are too bassy for my tastes.

Alex at APS thinks the D5000 with the APS v3 cable will still be slightly better than the D2000 with the same cable. He may be right. The main point is, if you are wary about the higher entry point, then the D2000 make more sense. Then if you don't like them as much as you would like to, later you can re-cable them and get tighter bass, richer mids and more extended highs (or sell them without too much loss instead).

Help me understand... If I can buy a D5000 for around $420, or less, which sounds fine with some very inexpensive mods, which I can then resell for around that price - why would I buy a D2000 with a $200+ cable mod for the same price (or around $420), which sounds about the same as the D5000, and which I can't sell for around that price?

Wouldn't I be better off to just buy the D5000?

To my ears I like the recabled D2000 better than stock D5000. I never heard a markl modded D5000, but the D5000 I heard sure needed the markl mod.

My APS v3 D2000 don't need the markl mods, so I am happy since it's like a closed HD600 and gives me something to rotate through when I want something mellow, smooth and sweet.

Does Denon sell replacement earcups? I assume you can simply swap out the D2000 earcups with a pair of the D5000 ear cups.

You can try S2 Audio. Scott (warrior5) does all the recabling and he does a great job, and I can vouch for him since he did a GREAT job on my HFI-780's for such an inexpensive price. He has great prices, but if you are looking for more expensive options, Apuresound is where most people go to get their headphones recabled.

Moon-Audio, and ALO are other options too, but I really recommend S2 Audio for the less expensive option.

The cable used on the D5000's are a pretty good cable.
i am using a D5000 cable from a broken
d5000 headphone and I modded it it to fit any Senheisser 580/600/650 headphones. I'm currently enjoying the
D5000 cable on a pair of HD25-1's and I think I prefer them on that headphone to the Equinox. I had the opportunity to try both and the D5000 cables although a little less refined than the Equinox are still a mighty nice cable. I had a pair of D2000. I couldn't find the interest to burn them in as the D5000 sound was so much more to my taste. The D2000 were good from the box but didn't match to a pair of
D5000. It could have been for a variety of reasons but in the end I still use the
D5000 often but I sold the D2000.
i'm sure the cable has a lot to do with the sound.
