(Be kind to the newbie)

I just got my Corda 3MOVE in the post and wanted to post my first impressions. My prior listening has been using a XIN Supermacro-3 (now defunct) through the HD600's and Shure E5c's. My first impressions are that this amp has plenty of power to drive the HD600's.

[I have read many posts suggesting that portable amps can not power full size cans, HD600 / 650's in particular. This is just not true. Are they going to match anything plugged into the mains? That is just an apples and oranges comparison. I can't put a tube amp in my pocket to take to my cabin in the French alps.]

That out of the way, I am using a LOD from my iPod Classic with slightly compressed audio files (320kb and V0). Both headphones shined. Compared to my Supermacro-3 this sound is more up front and not quite as warm (expected right out of the box). The lack of extension in the highs that has been mentioned in other posts I would agree with, but the highs are crystaline pure. The lows (Dead Can Dance / Fever Ray) are deep and strong but very well controlled. I would put this amp ahead of the Xin in this area. The mids (Norah Jones) are smooth as butter and roll out of the HD600's like they were meant for each other. The soundstage seems a bit tight compared to the Xin but I expect that to open up a bit with hours.

Paired with the E5c the difference was less impressive. In High current, High Gain mode (I am not going to switch back and forth) the volume dial is at 2/10 for comfortable listening and 4/10 is too much. They certainly sound plesant, but not dramatically different from the Xin.

It is early days and early morning. Gotta go to work. More later if anyone is interested.

Keep On Rockin'

I forgot, I am going to buy a rechargeable 9V for this amp. I am in the UK and all of the suggestions for rechargeables on this site seem to be CONUS only. I am going to try some Maplin 9V (cheap enough) and if they are no good I'd love another recommendation. Any bad experiences with SQ (battery life is not so important, I'll buy 2 and rotate them on the charger) would be of interest. Cheers.

On my shopping list when I go pick up the 9V Rechargeables.

12V compared to 9V (8.4V) = more power better SQ. YES, WE CAN!

Can't wait to hear it. Do you have this setup?

I listen to the HD650 out of the 3Move sometimes, and yes it can do a pretty reasonable job amping the HD650 (as well as the 600). I'm also looking to get a 12V charger for the 3Move.

Its nice when I want to listen to the HD650 away from my main desktop set up.

Still, for best sound you need a desktop, even better, a balanced amplifier for the HD600/650.

I've noted several times that my 3MOVE is one of the best portable amps for listening to the HD600 - it has good voltage swing and power for the 300 ohm cans, while other portable amps struggle at louder volumes. Many amps can sound nice with the HD600, but they just run out of power too early if you want more than moderate volume levels.

Somehow the 5v Vividaudiotech.com V1 also has a lot of juice for HD600, so I suspect they must use a voltage multiplier inside. It uses the same AD8397 opamp as the Pico but the Pico has an 8.4v power supply, yet the V1 can go louder without clipping with HD600. I need to try my dual 9v battery Headroom Micro Amp again with HD600.

Wonder what a 12V supply will do to the 3Move...

I dont know about the 3Move, but the Corda Porta III drives the HD650 pretty well if I connect it to the Amp3. Connected to any other source and the HD650 sounds pretty ordinary but it seems to synergize very well with the Amp3 and Porta III.
