I created wav file at 44100 sampling rate. When I tried to play this file using any media player and record it at the same time at another rate (96000 for example), I am getting the message:

"MMSYSTEM032 The specified format cannot be translated or supported. Use the Capabilities function to view supported formats."

Can I use the same sound card for playback and recording?

What sound card are you using? Some don't support 'full duplex' data handling (IN & OUT, but are IN <OR> OUT)

I forget what my settings are, but if I'm playing something while recording, it records what goes through the output as well. I was recording a whole LP side to vinyl and learned this: I had all the 'clicking' soundeffects on my recorded WAV!

Carddeluxe, analog in and out.
I don't have any problem with duplex while having the same sampling rate. Looks like it just can't handle the different ones at the same time.

What is the point of playing it at one rate and recording at another? You can use the convert sample rate function to change sample rate if you want.
