OK, so I'm playing in the lossless formats arena. I figure why get MP3s when I can get lossless and do the conversion myself.

What do all of you use for transcoding APE files? I tried a couple of programs I found online, but the results were terrible. LIke using MusicMatch to make MP3s. Might as well have thrown a CD against my ears and hoped to hear something.

Any pointers?

Since APE is lossless, all the files will sound the same.

I just use the monkey's encoder.

I mean to turn them into MP3's for portability...can't play them on my iPod unless I do.

I found my own answer: Easy CD-DA Extractor. Extracts and converts between every format I could want.

Nothing...I downloaded a few lossless files from Usenet to see what the buzz was about, and some were FLAC and some were Monkey's.

Haven't decided what I want to use yet for my own lossless storage....

Don't forget SHN-it's certainly the most common format I run across when downloading bit torrent files, with FLAC a respectable second.

APE isn't used much in that field-its proprietary and, unless I'm mistaken, is limited to the Windows platform (no Apple or Linux).
