I'm new to vinyl, and considering a used SL1300. I read that I need a phono preamp, but I'm wondering if I need this. I have a tube head-phone amp so can I just plug RCA out of the player straight into this?

Also saw something about a phono RIAA eq or something, not sure do I need one of these too?

How would an SL1300 compare to something like this (pro-ject III - $379)? http://www.magnoliaav.com/Products/P...6/Default.aspx

I know it's direct drive, not sure if this is a good or bad thing for hi-fi listening since it could possibly add some motor noise in?

You will need a phono preamp between your turntable and headphone amp in order to listen correctly with headphones. The Technics is built better but the Pro-ject has a more modern tonearm with no Auto. features. Its your call.
