Head-fi has struck me as one of the countless victims.

Right now I'm jamming to the HD201s. Man, I love these budget phones. However, I've got the urge to go on to bigger and better things.

I've been eyeing the HD555 for a couple of days. They've got a price tag I can respect and velour earcups, which I'm ashamed to admit is something I've come to want from dealing with crappy pleather.

My budget for headphones will be no more than $165. I was wondering if I was going along the right path or if anyone has any better suggestions? I listen to a lot of stuff, from light to hard.

Sennheiser's most significant closed cans are the HD280Pro. Unfortunately, they are pleather as well...although the are VERY comfortable (as compared to grados).

There is a good review thread on closed cans..

Beyerdynamic DT770Pro 80 ohm version.

If there's a Guitar Center near you, you may be able to grab a pair of them for about $160 out the door. I think there are a couple pairs for sale in the Headphones For Sale forum for around that price.

DT770-80 gets my vote.
K240s-55 and amp it with a go-vibe if you can tolerate pleather earpads.

Id take an amped K240s over an unamped DT770.. unless your headphone circuit has the output capacity to drive the DT.

K240S don't provide much isolation, K271S is probably a better way to go. They are my favourite closed headphone, however I have not heard the DT770's.

Yeah, sorry. Decided at the last moment anything was good. Didnt want to limit my options. I'm up for open too.

Unfortunatly, the closest guitar center is all the way in Grand Rapids.

I own both Senn HD280s and Beyer DT770Pro80s, and I think the Beyers are more comfortable. It's hard to say which sounds better. The Beyers are more colored, but for listening to an iPod I finf their coloration very pleasant, and I like them A LOT -- for my home headphone listening I mostly have to have a closed can, and I am now almost exclusively using the DT770.

But the HD280s are excellent, cheaper, and more neutral sounding than the Beyers, and still comfortable. So take your pick.
