From where i'm at, I can

get the MKIV at 300US
get the 336i at 360US

Now the question is... which has better synergy with DT880?

1) If its the MKIV then no problems here, since its cheaper.

2) If its the 336i is it really significantly better than the MKIV (with the dt880) to warrant the higher price?

3) Would both or either one give a huge improvement over a zero dac/amp?

I will be running these from the dac output on zero.

I am hoping for a warmer sound, slightly more forward/prominent mids with more body/warmth and slightly tamer highs.

Or should i just ditch the idea, sell my dt880s and buy a pair of Sennheiser HD600 or Denon D2000 instead?

My vote for HD 600. No matter what amp you'll buy, DT 880 will remain DT 880, more or less.
But, from you sig...you sold the HD 650? Don't liked them? Because HD 600 are NOT THAT different from HD 650.
Maybe your best bet is to mod your DT 880..

From what i heard of the hd600 and hd650, they sounded quite different to me... to me hd600 was like hd650 but with less bass and more treble across the spectrum.

I actually liked the hd650, but the biggest reason why i sold the 650s was because i'm pretty sure i'll like the hd600 better as long as i dont have a good tube amp to drive the hd650. So i could sell the hd650, buy the hd600, get better sound and still have money left over from the switch.

But if i keep the hd650, which cost me 360US, i wouldnt be able to bring myself to spend an additional 300+ to get a tube amp to make it sound what it should sound like. Not at this point in time at least.

But thanks to me selling it i now have 360 to spend on either an amp to improve the dt880s, or try a new pair of headphones.

Especially interested in the d2000 since i havent got a chance to hear it yet. What people have written about it in this forum certainly suggests that its a sound signature i am going to like a lot. Especially since i do not listen to classical/instrumentals at all.
