What's the best way of connecting 2.1 Speakers to a laptop? Should I buy an external sound card? How about one of those little USB sound card things? Or is it alright to just directly connect it to the laptop?

The headphone jack should work fine. If you want to upgrade your laptop's soundcard consider the Echo Indigo or a USB solution like the M-Audio Transit.

sound card's best, a good USB or PCMCIA one. Connecting straight in will *work* but you'll get tons of interference from the inside of the laptop, you'll hear every little thing that happens inside (especially the hard disk spinning up).
