I was thinking of getting a cheap Sound Blaster card to use the SBX software for games. I found this:

https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Bla...ds=sound+card&qid=1551682102&s=gateway&sr=8-4

I want to connect it to my Modi 3 and Liquid Spark in order to bypass the sound card's hardware while retaining the SBX capability. Can I do this by using a 3.5mm to coax cable into the Modi 3 from the card's headphone jack? Or do I need a card with a toslink output?

In the distant past i had a Sound Blaster live, where the black 3.5mm doubled as a digital output. It's hard to say if that will work on your card.
If i read the Q&A on Amazon, it seems like your card does not have any S/PDIF out whatsoever. I'm not 100% sure though.

I haven't heard of SBX, is it really worth it?

Thanks, I guess I'll do some more research. SBX is Creative's virtual surround. I used it back when I had a Sound Blaster ZXR and it worked well in games that otherwise had poor positional audio. Not worth buying a high end card just for SBX though if you already have a decent external amp and dac, which is why I was looking for the cheapest possible option.

It appears the Creative Audigy FX 5.1 sound card does not come with a S/PDIF (optical/coaxial) output, which would be needed to connect the Audigy FX 5.1 to any external DAC.
The DAC (Modi) needs digital input (optical/coaxial/USB).
Creative Labs X-Fi MB3 software ($30) can be installed on your computer and should work with just about any motherboard's on-board audio.

You can the run S/PDIF optical from the on-board audio, to the Modi.

Thanks, I didn't even know they had a software-only version of their surround stuff.

EQ your headphones to have a relatively flat uncompensated response with equalizer apo when using hrtf binaural convolution.

Out of Your Head is the only software available that uses measured room impulse responses. Waves NX has better fidelity and externalization than SBX, also has a head tracking unit that can be purchased separately. Redscape has a head tracking unit included with the software.
