Im new to using amps and was wondering do I even need an amp/dac combo with an ath-a700 and xfi-fatality sound card?

If I was to use an amp/dac combo does this go through my sound card or how does it work?

I was looking at the penguinamp and a penguinamp dac cable.

A dac bypasses your soundcard and you connect your amp to the dac. I can't advise on the x-fi, but a nice external dac will sound better than any internal sound card.
If you get a dac with usb, coaxial and optical, you have many choices- PC, dvd player, cd player...
