I am considering buying McIntosh cd player vith variable balanced out. Can I plug balanced headphones directly in. Would it be comparable quality as a headphone amp. Thank's for any input.

Sorry, no. You need amplification to drive the headphones. You would not connect loudspeakers directly to the CD player.

I found an adapter two rca to headphone female and I pluged it straight to output from my two cd players and soud was as good as amp, volume is dependent on output volts and ohm. One was too loud, one was medium. I think I could use it with SPL VOLUME2 box. But I am no expert and I might be wrong about some impendance distortions or other stuff. Outputs were rca. I have read that balanced have higher output.
