What do you think of my selection of parts for an iPhone LOD? Also where can I buy some good solder?

Ok that's reassuring. What do you think of the components I chose, and do I need anything else. I know I need the 68k resistor but I can get that really cheap.

Sorry for the questions, just never made one before.

Just some flux and solder and steady hands. Most people don't consider flux necessary with a decent rosin core solder, but surface prep is everything honestly and it just makes life a buttload easier.

The difference between a good cable that will last years and one that you have to keep patching up is patience and technique.

It's not 100% critical to a good build, think of it as sanitizing solution for your two soldering surfaces. It'll dissolve any rust, oil, or other contaminants which can foul the quality of your solder joint. Rosin core solder (it's what most solder is really) has something similar to this within the solder itself so it cleans the tip as you use it, but on stranded copper wire (which I understand you aren't using) it can be very difficult to get the solder to wick up the wire without this sort of prep since solder doesn't want to stick to anything that isn't hot or clean.

I feel that I'm planting too much in your head, it's really all easier than my ranting is making it sound like. You're gonna be just fine!

ok so i want to make a LOD for myself, please dont take me as an idot or anything im pretty new to this stuff but could i use a ipod charging cable as a LOD?? i was thinking something like a female USB to 3.5mm adapter to the charging cable would act as a very cheap lod..so it would go

ipod touch > ipod charging cable > female USB to male 3.5mm adapter > headphones..

please help i really think that this would be a really good idea and would really be a cost effective LOD

A lot of times solder will not stick to wire that does not have flux on it.  It is 100% important for me.

An iPod charging cable is set up for USB data, not the audio line out pins of the iPod.  The iPod/iPhone has four pins for USB power/data transfer (like a regular charging cable) and basically three pins for audio (left, right, and ground) like what most LODs or docks do.  If you want a low priced LOD just buy a Fiio L3, it is made of nice materials and costs very little.
