Got an unexpected Christmas present yesterday. I added another digital cable box to my TV in my bedroom earlier this week.

Then, on Thursday, a buddy gave me a $25 giftcard for Circuit City. I went there last night with every intention of buying the new U2 DVD with it.

Well, I got there and they had one of those bagain basement home theater in a boxes from a company called AMW (Amphion MediaWorks T342). It was normally priced at $149.99 but was on sale this weekend for $99. Subtract my nifty $25 giftcard for a whopping $74 and I just had to buy it for the bedroom.

It is a combo DVD player/Dolby 5.1 Processor/Amplifier, full function remote, 5 surround speakers , all cables for connecting the speakers and a small powered subwoofer. I had one of these cheapies from Apex last year and liked having it in the bedroom but gave it to a friend when her DVD player went kaput.

Anyhow, regardless of the mixed reviews this little wonder has gotten at the Circuit City site, for the price I could not be happier. Especially if you consider that's about what a good portable Sony PCDP costs! It sounds huge in my bedroom, played CDs beautifully, has AM/FM and input for my cablebox/TV and optical, coaxial and RCA audio outputs ( for that second Dolby Headphone processor I am plotting to get

. The transport is silent and there are tiny blue LEDS that of course we love.

For video out...there is a full compliment of component, composite and SVideo.

Many OS adjustments are available as well from the remote so you can really cater it to your room.

It is able to decode Dolby ProLogic II as well as Dolby Digital 5.1. It will pass a DTS signal which will be perfect for the Dolby Headphone processor when I add it. Sadly, the unit itself does not have a headphone out...but the RCA outs could be hooked up to a mint or small amp if you wanted.

I spent the day working in my bedroom and watched X-2, South Park, Hulk nad Springsteen in barcelona. I also listened to several CDs...everything sounding full, involving and very enjoyable.

I would recommend this to a student who wants a small feature filled HT in a dorm room or someone who wants to enjoy their DVDs alot more in the bedroom than with just the TV or stereo. It is not room shaking, but sounds full and realistic and can go very loud with equalized bass to boot.

anyhow....maybe it will breakdown tomorrow...but right now, I feel I got the bargain of the season. Here is a pic:

Stands I had already. The two rear surrounds are on the floor on either side of myu bed facing up....works perfectly in a prone watching position.

I'm tube rolling right now. Thanks for the review. I know a person or two who could use a nice budget system.

Neat! Looks like a fun setup. And for that money, who can argue the value, even if it doesn't hold up long-term?

So how long did you end up staying up? I had to call it quits. I was getting too tired to judge tubes anymore.

I've been reading on avsforum for a while also. I havn't registered and posted because I usually get my answers from searching. Tha forum is huge!

Although the money involved in home theater is greater than headphoning, I can't say it's a bigger black hole for the wallet but more like the credit card.

cheaper items are more "tempting". Like I can't go and spend 2000-3000 on my next projector as easily as I can on another headphone amp.
