Comparison FLAC recordings of Modi 2 Uber and Musicstreamer ii plus

Hey Kodhifi,

It's not that the modi recording was quiet, it's that both recordings were clipped, one more seriously so.

Recording levels *shouldn't* have been 100%, they should have been lowered until you could confirm that neither recording was clipping.

I think it's pretty safe to say that none of the particular people posting about your methodology had any investment in the Modi

You just need to listen to your recording of the MusicStreamer from the middle loud passages and note how it was distorted by the clipping, is all.

Cheers,
Joe

He's says he has no opportunity to rerun the recordings, and its obvious that there is little acceptance of the obvious flaws that were there. Let's move on and let him lick his self-perceived wounds.

Real science, which people can subscribe to it or not, often involves rework, and rework, and oh by the way rework... Placeobphiles want to live in a world where they are afforded the vanity of  everything they do being perfectly right the first time they do it. They pay big bucks for this illusion. Whatever.

I think he actually got all his money back this time around anyway... :xf_eek:

My concern is that the indicted component may have been innocent, just louder.

If it was really that distorted internally, I guess my estimation of that companies' products went down a large number of notches.

It was the quiet component with the unclipped recording that he didn't like.

Recording levels were 100% then normalized, I'm not going to repeat anything and the modi was already returned. Complaining about the level of the sound is to miss the point of a raw recording of a DAC output with the same settings for each DAC. My argument wasn't "The modi is a quiet DAC" it's that it sounds like mud. If you love your modi, love your modi. If I hadn't sent it back I'd be using it as a paper weight right now. You disagree, run your own tests.

Peace.

You cannot make any kind of a serious attempt at a comparison with such a huge level imbalance it is a completely pointless exercise. I downloaded your musicstreamer and modi samples and when you plot energy vs frequency the curves are very close until you get to almost 20K, the difference, apart from the awful clipping lies in the enormous level differences, and we know that even a slight increase in loudness for the same signal is generally perceived as a more dynamic sound. I exported the spectra and plotted them in Excel as a set of lines and again give or take a few deviations the curves were very close to about 19.5K just displaced by several db. Whether the clipping came from a bad recording or the music streamer DAC itself I do not know but 2.5 is kinda hot and if you did not set the level correctly it would be easy to get the needles to bang over the end stops
