A: These player has very good sound quality, but I think sound quality alone the iRiver is better. It is smoother throughout the entire frequency range. The philips however has better imaging, a more open sound, and the best EQ I have used in a 20+GB player.
B: If you overboost certain frequencies it can add noticeable distortion. So it depends on how much you boost certain frequencies. If equalized right you can change the sound in any way you want. Overall, a very good equalizer.
C: 80Kbps sounds bad on any mp3 player , though listenable as long as the song is good. I have a few songs on 80Kbps, and they cause problems on the philips when the custom EQ is on. It may be a bug, or the software that was used to encode them. Most of my songs which are 192 to 320kbps sound very good on this player; as good as they sound on other players. These files show off the philips, and ipods openess to the sound in comparison to the iRiver.
D: I tried the shure E5 at digital life out of the iRiver, and the second time I went out of the philips. In comparison to my e3's they sounded awesome out of both players, though I preferred how they sounded out of the iRiver. The philips with it's better equalizer, allows for different sound signatures, however.
E: The equalizer can make the sound, not really better, but much more enjoyable (As long as you don't overboost certain frequencies). Also overboosting the midbass can muddy the overall sound.
F: While I found the E5c are well driven by the philips, you may feel better about your purchase by going for something with a better output like the iaudio, iriver, ipod, or a rio. If you buy the philips you may be left with the feeling " I wonder how they would have sounded with a more powerful player". I really don't think a few miliwatts will a noticeable difference in the sound of something as efficent as these shures.

B: I need to use the player with my Shure E5C’s and would like to know if the custom equalizer adds any noticeable distortion or if it does a good job at adjusting the sound without making it un-listenable?? C: I am not speaking of “80Kbps mp3” stuff, I am curious about the sound of 128 and 192 – 320Kbs mp3 stuff. D: In your review, you mentioned that the Philips HDD6330 has lower output then the other players, do you think this unit would be good for driving my E5C’s ? E: Can the sound be made to sound better with the EQ ?, I am speaking strictly from the headphone out jack, not the line out. F: I want to make a purchase, but I don’t want to make a mistake of getting something that cannot drive my IEM’s to optimal level and bring out good quality, and there does not seem to be a way to listen to these things before you buy them. |
