comparing cd players? how to?

When I've tried to compare equipment using music CDs (and we all know it's an inexact process), I just concentrate on one kind of sound at a time. For example, on the first pass, I focus on bass drum kicks and nothing else. Then I go back and pick out the vocals, or midrange, speed, soundstage, and so on.

You can go by an 'overall impression' (e.g. groove, lushness etc) but that becomes a very subject thing, easily influenced by emotions, volume/output stage levels for components (as someone said earlier), and other things.

Also remember that with good equipment like yours, a set of headphone is going to squeeze the potential fidelity down, compared say to using full-range speakers. Therefore differences may be subtle on a HD650 or not noticable at all...

Yeah I definately burn the CDr's from the same source with the same discs etc. As Bigshot said perhaps there is a difference in output level but even accounting for that I notice major differences. As one poster said, if the difference is neglible snd/or you have to think long & hard to spot it, its not worth buying another player for.
