I originally planned to just use the AV710 for my HD497 cans, and using the nforce2 digital out for my altec lansing ada880 dolby digital speakers.
But after plugging my speakers into the av710 using analog, I heard a HUGE improvement, which I did not expect to hear.

Is it possible for the chaintech to have a better DAC than the one built into my speakers?

If not, I would like to try spdif with my speakers. Are there any output pins onboard that I can wire to a coaxial plug? I made one for my abit nf7-s nforce2.

Possibly. If the AV-710 sounds better to you than most likely the DAC on the AV-710 is better.

I don't think so but you can buy converters from Radioshack for $15.

I was thinking maybe soundstorm wasn't putting out a good digital signal.

That is possible too. Why not buy the converter from a RadioShack store near you so you can return it if the DAC in the speakers turns out to be worse.

Very like the WM8728 on the AV-710 will sound better than the CS4227 inside Altec Lansing speakers. After all, the CS4227 is only 20-bit 48-KHz if I didn't remember wrongly ...
