a noobie question.

From what I understand from this fourm, Toslink and Coaxial use some kind of digital signal, (oppose to analogue signal of RCA), that uses like 0s and 1s.

If this is true, how do these connections transmit the level of volume?

I use Toslink from PC to DAC, and was just wondering how is it possible that increasing the volume of Foobar increases the volume of music, since the signal from PC to DAC is only in 1 and 0s ??

Thanks in advance

The 1's and 0's include information about the volume.

Foobar changes the 0's and 1's that get sent.
music consists of 44.1khz 16bit samples, that create one waveform. 16 0's and 1's make up the 16bit sample that sais where that waveform is at a given time, so if you alter that sample you can get the wave to be lower at that time and sound quieter.
