I'm looking to get back into learning bass guitar, and since I work long hours in a computer ops center with lots of free time, thinking about practicing at work on weekends and noghts.  But, headphone amps for bass and guitar are almost universally cheap POS.

Is there a CMOY or other small handheld amp that works with instrument level inputs instead of line-level?

Ideally:

1. USB power, possibly with recharging circuit for internal off the shelf batteries, 9V or AA
2. Tone control (Not sure I've seen any CMOY builds with a tone pot)
3. Drive decent over the ear headphones.

Just my 2 cents

1. a cmoy is useless as a guitar amplifier, the pickups on a guitar will not drive a cmoy you need a a high impedence input

2. use the tone controls on your guitar

3. An electric guitar puts out a staggering amount of harmonics and distrotion, have a look on a CRO if you don't believe me :) so driving good head phones is not really an issue

bottom line a simple LM386 circuit for personal use will do the job very nicely

I can send you a pcb for a guitar amp if you ar willing to pay the postage (your call)

cheers
FRED
