I need to get a set of closed backed headphones for tracking in my home studio, particularly for vocals and guitar.  The closed back headphone of choice these days seems to be the ATH M50, but some reviews say the midrange is a little laid back and the bass is a bit heavy.  This is not for mixing so I don't mind the bass being a little heavy, but for vocals and guitar it would be preferable to have something that has good, upfront midrange.

Suggestions?

I would look at the AKG k271 mkII: http://www.akg.com/K271+MKII-1039.html?pid=1197

They are around the same price and are designed specifically for studio use. Based on the FR, they should have more neutral bass. They look like they have similar mids to the MTH 50, but the lack of that bass bloat will make the mids more present in comparison.

That looks like a winner.  The frequency response seems to be what I'm looking for and I'm a fan of AKG.  I will research those more, for sure.

Anybody compare the Shure and/or AKG to Beyer DT770?
